Chris Stone

Chris Stone, born in Leicester in 1950, has built an illustrious career as a textile designer, his artistic journey taking him from the classrooms of Loughborough College of Art and Winchester School of Art to the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. Upon graduating, his talent was immediately recognised by Ken Scott, a prominent American designer based in Milan. In the early ’70s, as “the Italian Look” reigned supreme in the fashion world, Chris’s designs became synonymous with the cutting-edge style of the era.

For over a decade, Chris’s Italian studio was a crucible of creativity, where he collaborated with textile manufacturers and fashion houses to produce designs that were predominantly fashion-focused. As the ’80s dawned, his artistry extended to the realm of bed linen. In 1984, a pivotal move to Melbourne ensued when he accepted the role of Design Director at Sheridan, transforming it from a predominantly Australian domestic brand to an international name featured in over 50 countries.

With the company’s relocation to Sydney in 1987, where Chris continues to reside, he pioneered a colour prediction report that anticipated home furnishing colour trends. Concurrently, he began imparting his extensive knowledge to textile students at a university in Sydney, a practice he maintains to this day after 40 years.

As the textile industry shifted overseas in 2000, and the demand for hand-painted artwork waned locally, Chris adapted his craft to painting canvases, thus continuing his commitment to the arts.

Today, Chris Stone’s legacy continues to flourish as he joins the Australian Museum of Design (AMoD). With a treasure trove of designs inspired by his life’s travels and the rich tapestry of Australian nature, his hand-drawn and hand-painted works are a celebration of Australiana, featuring vibrant flowers, birds, and scenic vistas. As one of Australia’s most sought-after textile designers, whose artwork graced the collections of other renowned Australians, AMoD is honoured to include his distinguished designs in our library collection.

Chris will also lend his expertise to AMoD in forecasting and colouring, enriching our collection with his unique designs. Welcoming Chris into AMoD is a testament to his enduring influence and the timeless appeal of his work.
